The Aviation Subcommittee has the important responsibility of overseeing the Federal Aviation Administration’s work to safely integrate unmanned aerial systems (UAS) into the national airspace system, which Congress mandated in the FAA Modernization and Reform Act of 2012. AUVSI President and CEO Michael Toscano made the following statement:
“The unmanned systems industry could not have asked for a more thoughtful and knowledgeable leader to head the Aviation Subcommittee than Rep. LoBiondo. The integration of UAS into the national airspace set to begin in 2015 will usher in a new era of aviation innovation, and lead to the creation of thousands of new jobs. Rep. LoBiondo’s knowledge of the remarkable potential of UAS technology makes him the right man for this job at a critical time. AUVSI looks forward to working with Rep. LoBiondo toward the safe and responsible integration of UAS into our skies, and unlocking the virtually limitless potential for this technology to save time, save money and save lives.”
The UAS integration process laid out in the FAA Modernization and Reform Act required the FAA to develop a timetable for the selection of six UAS test sites across the U.S. However, the FAA has delayed the selection of these sites.
Last year, AUVSI also endorsed legislation introduced by Rep. LoBiondo reaffirming the 4th Amendment rights of Americans with regard to the use of UAS by law enforcement.
